Korean Box (Buxus microphylla) – Compact Evergreen Hedge for Formal Gardens
Also known as Korea Box, the Korean Box (Buxus microphylla) is a hardy, compact evergreen shrub with small glossy green leaves. Similar in look to Dutch Box but slightly taller, Korean Box is an excellent choice for regions with warmer, drier summers. It thrives in full sun to part shade, is frost tolerant, and grows into a neat, dense shape that’s perfect for formal evergreen hedges, borders, and topiary.
For hedging, plant at 20 cm spacing and expect a 30 cm high hedge within around 3 years. Its tidy growth habit makes it ideal for clipping into low hedges, garden borders, or decorative shapes.
Like other Buxus plants, Korean Box is relatively slow growing and shade tolerant, making it a classic choice for traditional and structured gardens.
Seasonal Care Tip: Young Buxus plants may bronze or change colour in very cold winters, especially when bright sunny days follow frosty nights or when exposed to cold winds. This is normal and temporary. To reduce bronzing, apply dolomite lime and fertiliser in autumn before the cold sets in. Feed again with an all-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage lush new growth and restore the deep green foliage.
