The Story

Japanese Box (Buxus microphylla var. japonica) – The Best Evergreen Hedge for Warm Climates

Japanese Box, also known as Buxus japonica, is a hardy, compact evergreen shrub with lush dark green oval leaves. Renowned as the best box hedge for warmer regions, it thrives in full sun to part shade and has excellent heat tolerance compared to other Buxus varieties. Once established, it requires minimal water, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners.

Perfect for formal evergreen hedges, borders, and topiary, Japanese Box grows into a dense, compact shape that clips beautifully. Plant at 40 cm spacing for hedging, and expect growth of around 1 m high x 70 cm wide within 3 years. Its small glossy leaves and uniform growth habit make it a favourite for traditional and structured garden designs.

While most Buxus are slow-growing and shade tolerant, Japanese Box is particularly versatile and reliable in Australian gardens.

Seasonal Care Tip: Young Buxus plants may bronze or change colour in very cold winters, especially when bright days follow frosty nights or when exposed to cold winds. This is normal and temporary. To minimise bronzing, apply dolomite lime and fertilise in autumn before the weather cools too much. In early spring, feed with an all-purpose fertiliser to encourage fresh growth and restore the rich dark green foliage.

These are live plants supplied in 50mm pots.

Live plant 5 packs are perfect for landscaping.

Minimum order of 2 packs across our Live Plant range.
